The Phoenix & Scottsdale Dining Guide

January 24, 2023 Makenzi Hogan Grau

From James Beard award winning restaurants to salt-of-the-earth favorites, Phoenix and Scottsdale boast an exceptional (and exceptionally varied) culinary scene. To narrow down the top choices from a plethora of great eats, Culinary Contributor, Marci Symington of TEXAZTASTE has traveled around the Valley tasting the best. Here, we’ve compiled her guides to Dining Like a Local.

Dine Like a Local Winners: Best Restaurants in North Scottsdale

January 1, 2023 Makenzi Hogan Grau

As culinary contributor to The Scout Guide Phoenix & Scottsdale, this is my last of four posts covering their 2021 Dine Like a Local contest.  This year you may notice that I am posting the winners on a quarterly basis and have focused each post on a specific area of the Valley. Below are the winners of the best restaurants in North Scottsdale. If you missed my first post on Central, Uptown and Downtown Phoenix, you can find it here, my second post on Arcadia and the Biltmore area here, and my third post on South Scottsdale/Old Town is here.

In each category, the winners for North Scottsdale restaurants–chosen by the public–are listed first, followed by one of my choices from the nominated restaurants, as indicated by the stars**

My hope is for you to try some of these spots, and as always, please drop me a line to tell me what you think! In the meantime, eat and drink well locally!  xo, M

COFFEE, TEA, SWEETS

Canolis galore! Photo courtesy of @thesicilianbaker.

SODA JERK MILKSHAKE BAR

5350 E High Street, #109, Phoenix | www. sodajerkco.com | Soda Jerk is a modern take on the old fashioned soda fountain and is located in a development called High Street, a shopping/retail/condo/restaurant development just north of the Highway 101 near 56th St. Soda Jerk offers over-the-top hand-crafted milkshakes, floats, and and sundaes. Go for one of their seasonal flavors or stick to a signature milkshake, like the Death By Chocolate, or my favorite–I am a bit old fashioned myself–the Mint to Be, filled with Andes Chocolate Mint-covered Oreos, Hershey’s chocolate bar, and topped with vanilla whipped cream, fudge, and an Oreo crumb rim.

THE SICILIAN BAKER

MARCI’S PICK | 15530 N Tatum Blvd, #140, Phoenix | www.the sicilianbaker.com | The original Sicilian Baker–for there are now three–opened next to its sister concept, The Sicilian Butcher in 2019 in North Scottsdale off Tatum Road. Developed by celebrity chef Joey Maggiore, his wife and lead designer Cristina Maggiore, and business partner Flora Tersigni, The Sicilian Baker specializes in cannoli–giant and small–while also offering a selection of arancini, pizzettes, traditional Sicilian sponge cake, muffuletta sandwiches, and Sicilian cookies. In addition, you can order cappuccinos, lattes, cold brews, Italian sparkling sodas, fresh pasta, sauces, house-made sausages, meats, and cheese at their full-service counter.

BRUNCH & LUNCH

ZINC BISTRO

15034 N Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale | www.zincbistro.com | Since 2002, Zinc Bistro has been serving French bistro classics in Kierland Commons to valley diners under the leadership of Arizonian, Chef Matt Carter.  Think everything you love about French food: oysters, onion soup, moules marinières, croque monsieur, flat iron steak, diver scallops, chocolate soufflé, and beignets.  In addition, there are a couple of American-ized favorites, like the “Zinc” Burger with blue cheese, the Macaroni Au Gratin, and the Shaved Grilled Chicken Caesar.  Plus, the garden patio at this North Scottsdale restaurant is stunning, as is the 25-foot zinc bar for which the bistro is named.

THE MISSION

MARCI’S PICK | 7122 E Greenway Pkwy, Suite 140, Scottsdale | www.the missionaz.com | Chef Matt Carter is also the force behind The Mission in Kierland Commons, which is the second Mission location after the original one in Old Town Scottsdale. Choose from a variety of modern Latin dishes whose influences range from Spain, Mexico, Central America to South America. Home-made tortillas, arepas (Colombian specialty), and salsas are made fresh daily and all meats are prepared on a plancha or a grill using pecan and mesquite wood.  Brunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm.  Favorites include a Shaved Kale Salad with Ají Amarillo (Peruvian chili) Vinaigrette, Almejas al Vapor, Grilled Street Corn, Anticuchos, Gorditas, and a variety of street tacos.  Don’t miss out of the Espresso Churros for dessert.

DINNER & DATE NIGHT

HUSH PUBLIC HOUSE

14202 N Scottsdale Rd #167, Scottsdale | www.hushpublichouse.com | Chef Dom Ruggiero left his long-standing stint at Chelsea’s Kitchen and joined forces with restaurateur Charles Barber, who oversaw the bar program at Zinc Bistro.  Now, at their North Scottsdale restaurant, they serve valley diners their take on classic dishes like Pâté en Croute, Macaroni au Gratin, and Steak Frites, as well as some of their original specialties like Fried Cauliflower with house-made harissa, Wild Mushroom Ragout with poached Farmi duck egg, Duck Fried Rice. Along with one of my favorite all-time dishes served in the Valley (not exaggerating), the Chicago-style Italian Beef Sandwich with braised oxtail, smoked provolone, and giardiniera on brioche bread.

ANDREOLI ITALIAN GROCER

MARCI’S PICK | 8880 E Vía Linda, Scottsdale | www.andreoli-grocer.com | Owner and chef Giovanni Scorzo, Calabria born and Liguria raised, made big news this year as the only Arizona chef to make it as a finalist for the James Beard Best Chef of the Southwest award. Scorzo moved to Arizona after meeting ASU student Linda Rupp, who was studying abroad in Italy, and followed her back to the states, eventually marrying and together they have been behind several Valley favorites (remember La Bruschetta or Lecabaffi?) before opening Andreoli. Scorzo makes all his own bread and pastries, tiramisu, cannoli, and chocolates. Daily specials in the restaurant might include Italian specialties like Farfalla alla Boscaiola, Rigatoni con Salsiccia e Piselli, and Pasta e Fagioli soup. Definitely check out the deli counter where you’ll find high quality imported meats, cheeses, and olives, or the bakery counter, which is filled with cookies and pastries.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY

Brunch at Campo with the Campo Benedicto. Photography courtesy of @campoitalian.

CAMPO ITALIAN BISTRO & BAR

8260 N Hayden Rd, Scottsdale | www.campoitalian.com | Campo Italian Bistro & Bar is part of the Genuine Concepts restaurant group (The Vig, The Womack, and The Little Woody) and is located near McCormick Ranch at the intersection of Hayden and Via de Ventura. Open weekdays for dinner and weekends for brunch and dinner in North Scottsdale, Campo boasts soothing interiors and a lovely patio with an Italian-countryside theme that carries through to the menu. A hearty selection of antipasti, like Mushroom Arancini, Cannellini Bean Hummus and Whipped Eggplant Purée are a prelude to house made pastas, pizzas made with local organic flour, and main courses like Red Wine Braised Short Rib and Chicken Parmigiana. Save room for a Semifreddo or Affogatofor dessert.

THE AMERICANO

MARCI’S PICK | 17797 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale | www.theamericanorestaurant.com | Opened February 5, 2020, the restaurant concept by Pomo Restaurant Group and Creation Hospitality wows with European table side service, fine China flatware, innovative cocktails and an expansive wine list crafted by beverage director and head sommelier, Nick Padua. The Americano’s craft cocktail menu features six signature cocktails, plus five to eight seasonal cocktails created by the bar team every quarter. Presentations are show stopping, attracting the attention of diners from across the expansive dining room. Order a Drunken Wifey cocktail before diving into decadent menu selections like Caviar Fries, Braised Wagyu Beef Cheeks, Spiced Moulard Duck Breasts and Veal Chop Parmigiana.

VALLEY CLASSIC

It’s not all about the steak at Dominick’s. Photo courtesy of @domsteak.

DOMINICK’S STEAKHOUSE

15169 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale | www.dominickssteakhouse.com | Dominick’s Steakhouse opened in 2011 by brothers Jeff and Mike Mastro, who in 1999 launched the Mastro’s steakhouse legacy, selling the wildly popular concept in 2007.  For their second act, the brothers partnered with their father, Dennis Mastro, and Scott Troilo to create Prime Steak Concepts. In 2011, they opened Dominick’s Steakhouse in the Scottsdale Quarter, followed by Steak 44 (named for its location on 44th Street and Camelback in Phoenix) in 2013 and most recently, Ocean 44.   Dominick’s prides itself on elegant fine dining with exceptional personal service and a menu featuring prime steaks, fresh seafood, and an extensive wine selection.  The menu is located on the website and almost identical to that of Steak 44.

LA HACIENDA

MARCI’S PICK | 7575 E Princess Dr, Scottsdale | www.scottsdaleprincess.com | Chef Richard Sandoval, the so-called father of modern Mexican cuisine, collaborated with the Scottsdale Princess Resort to create the menu for this North Scottsdale restaurant led by Executive Chef Forest Hamrick. The course of your evening should go something like this: order a signature margarita or a tequila “neat” from one of La Hacienda’s 200 tequila selections while you peruse the menu. The table side guacamole is very popular, as is the Tampiqueña–my favorite meat dish from Tampico– the Shrimp Enchiladas and the Braised Short Rib Tacos. End with the Flaming Coffee, served table side, with tequila, coffee, cream, and cinnamon that will have you truly feeling as if you were in Mexico City.

LOCAL LIBATIONS

A colorful selection of brunch cocktails at Culinary Dropout. Image courtesy of @culinarydropout.

CULINARY DROPOUT

15125 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale | www.culinarydropout.com | Culinary Dropout is a Fox Restaurant Concept that originated in Old Town Scottsdale, across from Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall. It quickly expanded to Phoenix, Tempe, Tucson, and Gilbert, and is touted as a place where friends can gather to play games, have drinks, and listen to live music.  Their Pretzel Balls and Provolone Fondue are famous, easily shared, and paired with cocktails that are known as “vices” that run the gamut from a Signature Old Fashioned to the Evil Jungle Princess, with rum, orgeat, pineapple, guava, and lime.

GIN & REEL

MARCI’S PICK | 5415 E High St Ste 103, Phoenix | www.thestircoffeebar.com | Gin and Reel is a hidden bar behind The Stir Coffee Bar on High Street. I don’t want to give too much away and ruin the surprises. You need a password to enter, but the password is found in the coffee shop. Behind the hidden door is a quaint cocktail lounge reminiscent of “old Hollywood” during the 1920s, where most of the cocktails on the menu would reflect the 1920s, such as a Manhattan, Sazerac, Gimlet, or Vesper. Just my kind of place… and one of the best secrets (or maybe not so much a secret anymore!) around town!

I hope you enjoyed this list of some of the best restaurants in North Scottsdale! If you’re looking for more recommendations in other areas of the valley, check out my About Town archive, or my most recent Dine Like a Local post which features restaurants in South Scottsdale and Old Town.

Below are the winners of the best restaurants in Old Town and South Scottsdale. In writing this post, I took a nostalgic trip down memory lane as this list includes several I frequented upon first moving to the Valley in 1993. I love seeing that some old favorites have stood the test of time!

COFFEE, TEA & SWEETS

FOURTILLFOUR

7105 E 1st Ave, Scottsdale, AZ | www.fourtillfour.com | Fourtillfour, on the corner of 1st Avenue and Marshall Way, resembles a renovated garage, with much of the seating outside on the patio and on the grassy shaded yard. Fourtillfour’s owner, Nico Samaras, found inspiration for the concept from his time living in San Francisco and the spaces he would frequent in the beautiful City by the Bay. As a Marine Corps. veteran, car enthusiast, and avid traveler, Samaras has been around vintage cars all of his life, and wanted to combine his love of caffeine, cars, and adventure. Every weekend, they host “Cars and Coffee” events…so check their website for the schedule. The name, Fourtillfour, is derived from the vanity plate on Samaras’s Porsche model 356, when read on a clock is 3:56, or four minutes till four. They serve a variety of coffee, lattés, espresso, cappuccinos, cold brew and tea, my favorite drink for the moment being the Vanilla Lavender Latté. Fourtillfour also sells its own brand of coffee, Four Coffee, that is roasted in-house and sold in what looks like oil cans. Fuel for the body, if you will.

BERDENA’S

MARCI’S PICK | 7051 E 5th Ave Suite I, Scottsdale, AZ | www.berdenas.com | Where to go to wash down the best avocado toast in town with some of the best coffee in town? Berdena’s is a cozy specialty coffee shop on 5th Avenue and Goldwater that, in addition to killer avocado toast, has organic and local coffees and pastries. Other favorites include honey lavender lattes, cardamom rose lattes, plus quick savory breakfast options like a breakfast sandwich, a burrito, and The Oliver, with a fried egg, cheddar cheese, arugula and house-made chipotle aioli, served on a brioche bun. Owner Jonathan Madrigal kept the interior pleasant and cheery, with black and white ceramic tile and a periwinkle blue Synesso espresso machine that will brighten anyone’s day. Berdena’s fans in Central Phoenix will be thrilled to know that Madrigal recently opened a second location in The Fred shops off Missouri and 12th Street.

BRUNCH & LUNCH

ARCADIA FARMS CAFE

7014 E 1st Ave, Scottsdale, AZ | www.arcadiafarmscafe.com | Carolyn Ellis opened Arcadia Farms in 1990 as a small carryout market and bakery on 1st Avenue. Thirty years later, Arcadia Farms has evolved into a beloved “ladies who lunch” boutique café, a gourmet marketplace, private dining venue, and a full service catering company. My favorite has been, and probably always will be, the Warm Chopped Vegetable Salad topped with a Crab Cake or Salmon, depending on my mood. That being said, I encourage you to try one of The Classics, like the Chicken, Wild Mushroom and Leek Crepes. They also have a lovely list of wines by the glass and by the bottle, but if you get too rowdy, remember this is a “ladies who lunch” spot and you will be shushed (I speak from experience). Don’t have time to lunch? Pick up a salad, sandwich, or homemade chicken to-go at The Marketplace (and don’t forget a Lemon Cake Cookie!). Or, go online to check out their dinners to-go for $50 and $100, plus a schedule for cooking classes. It appears there is nothing Carolyn Ellis cannot do. Here’s to another 30 years!

POSTINO WINECAFE

4821 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ | www.postinowinecafe.com | Postino’s Winecafe appears to be well loved as it made both the list for the Arcadia/Biltmore area and the Scottsdale area. In case you didn’t catch my previous post, here is a recap: Craig and Kris DeMarco opened the first Postino WineCafe in the old Arcadia post office next to La Grande Orange on Campbell and 40th Street. After having returned from a vacation to Italy in the late 90’s, they realized Phoenix needed a place where you could get a good, affordable glass of wine along with a bite to eat. The Postino Arcadia WineCafe was born, and now there are 17 across the country with plans for more. The Scottsdale Highland sits inside a 1960’s building that housed the former Valley National Bank branch. Brent Karlicek is the beverage director for the company and he curates a wonderful wine list as well as a seasonal wine-based cocktail menu to pair with their famous bruschetta, panini sandwiches, and savory salads.

Photography courtesy of @chula_seafood.

CHULA SEAFOOD

MARCI’S PICK | 8015 E Roosevelt St, Scottsdale, AZ | www.chulaseafood.com | Jon and Mandy Heflin and Hogan Jamison, founders of Chula Seafood, have made it their mission to bring the highest quality fish to the Valley. Jon’s father, an avid swordfish fisherman, established connections within the fishing community in San Diego. Using this network, Jon and Mandy bought a van and started transporting fresh fish from the wharf in San Diego to Phoenix, supplying select restaurants and chefs in the Valley, such as Chris Collins, Atlas Bistro, FnB, and Sam Fox. By fostering these contacts, they were able to build a retail presence selling fish in Vincent’s Saturday market. Their first brick and mortar (they now have 3) is Chula Scottsdale, affectionately called Rosie. They pride themselves in showcasing what is available and fresh, from tuna, oysters, urchin, and rockfish to California halibut. Chula’s other two locations are in Uptown and North Scottsdale.

DINNER & DATE NIGHT

SEL RESTAURANT

7044 E Main St, Scottsdale, AZ | www.selrestaurant.com | Sel is a small fine dining restaurant located amid the art galleries of Main Street in Old Town Scottsdale. Chef Branden Levine–incidentally the former executive chef at Café Monarch–and his wife, May, offer seasonal four-course tasting and vegetarian menus of contemporary American Cuisine; in addition, diners are able to order à la carte. Sel is quaint and chic, sourcing fresh, organic, and locally produced ingredients to the extent possible. As an example, items you might see on the menu include Ahi Tuna Poke, Iberico Pork Tenderloin Schnitzel, Grilled SFR Wagyu Filet Mignon, and Flourless Chocolate Tiramisu.

FnB RESTAURANT

MARCI’S PICK | 7125 E 5th Ave #31, Scottsdale, AZ | www.fnbrestaurant.com | Executive Chef Charleen Badman hails from Tucson, and after working in New York City for several years, moved to Phoenix to open FnB with Pavle Milic, sommelier and now very popular winemaker of Los Milics Vineyards out of Elgin, Arizona. Chef Badman won the James Beard Best Chef of the Southwest award in 2019, and you can imagine that reservations are very difficult to come by. Once you do get that coveted ressy, put yourself in the hands of the servers to recommend dishes and a glass of Arizona wine to accompany them. Some of my favorite dishes in the past have been vegetarian based, as Chef Badman does wonders with vegetables. Just a glance at the sample menu has me imagining how delicious the grilled okra, with ginger labne and urfa hazelnuts must be.

Photography courtesy of @reserveoldtown.

RESERVE OLD TOWN

NEW & NOTEWORTHY | 6934 E 1st Ave #102, Scottsdale, AZ | www.reserveoldtown.com | Reserve Old Town is described as an “ultra-fine dining” venue that is situated across the street–and owned by–the same owners as Monarch Café (see below). Reserve serves 25 diners per night, Wednesday through Saturday, from 6:30 p.m. to close. Guests enter through a garden for a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres before moving to a beautiful courtyard for dinner. Reserve offers a tasting menu of 8 courses, with other bites in between, for $285. Wine and cocktails are served by the glass under the guidance of three advanced sommeliers. I have read that the inspiration for Reserve came from a culinary expedition that executive chef and owner, Gustavo Lewkowicz, took through Spain. Reserve is high on my list to visit as I believe it is the only tasting menu in the Valley I have yet to try, so stayed tuned!

PIZZERIA VIRTU

MARCI’S PICK | 6952 E Main St, Scottsdale, AZ | www.pizzeriavirtu.com | If you are looking for pizza that, in my humble opinion, is as good as Bianco’s (yes, I realize this is a big statement and I will stand by it), then head to Pizzeria Virtù on Scottsdale’s Main Street. Chef Gio Osso serves up Neapolitan-style pizza like the Affumicata, with charred tomato, smoked scamorza, roasted garlic and basil, plus dishes reminiscent of his first restaurant, Virtù Honest Craft–which he opened in 2013 and has one of the most beautiful patios in town–like the Ragu and the N’duja Arrabiata. You will also enjoy some killer cocktails and a beautifully curated wine list. Run, don’t walk.

CAFE MONARCH

VALLEY CLASSIC | 6939 E 1st Ave, Scottsdale, AZ | www.cafemonarch.com | Café Monarch may look new, but don’t let the fancy Tuscan columns fool you. Monarch was originally located across the street in what is now Reserve Old Town, and owned by the talented Chris Van Arsdale, who cooked, served and bused while churning out amazing food. In time, he sold to a former employee, Christian Lewkowicz, who enlisted members of his family to buy Monarch in 2013. The Lewkowiczes – led by current executive chef Gustavo – then moved the operation into a former designer showroom across the street, adding a stunning bar, patio and extensive wine cellar boasting close to 2,000 bottles. You can choose from a four-course dinner or vegetarian menu, or order à la carte at the bar only.

Photography courtesy of @shinbay_az.

SHINBAY

MARCI’S PICK | 3720 N Scottsdale Rd #201, Scottsdale, AZ | www.shin-bay.com | ShinBay is a small, jewel box of a Japanese restaurant located on Scottsdale Road that is the closest experience to eating in Japan you will find in Arizona, and certainly is on par with similar concepts in large West Coast cities such as LA and San Francisco. Executive chef Shinji Kurita’s beautifully crafted dishes place an emphasis on the freshest ingredients. But it is also about the understated elegance, the meticulous attention paid to every detail. Each flawlessly crafted course is served in equally elegant and sleek Japanese china. Shinbay offers two seatings each evening, at 5:45 pm and at 8 pm. Reservations are required for the omakase tasting menu, and allow for 2 hours for the meal.

LOCAL LIBATIONS

AZ 88

7353 E Scottsdale Mall, Scottsdale, AZ | www.az88.com | An oldie but goodie located in the Scottsdale Civic Center mall, AZ88 opened its doors March 1988, hence the “88” in the name. Inspired by the good food, drink, and conversation, Karl Kopp opened AZ88 to create a bar and restaurant that would be so distinctive in its quality and style as to become a Scottsdale landmark. Known for its great burgers, galettes (flat bread) and martinis, the fare is simple and the presentation always artful. Remember when Cosmopolitans were all the rage? If you are still a fan, I am here to tell you that AZ 88 has the tastiest! Open until 1:30 it is probably one of the best places for a “final final” around town.

BLUE CLOVER DISTILLERY

MARCI’S PICK | 7042 E Indian School Rd, Scottsdale, AZ | www.bluecloverdistillery.com | Co-owner and distillery GM Weston Holm makes premium small batch vodka and gin spirits at Blue Clover Distillery, Old Town’s first micro-distillery. Each Blue Clover bottle is hand-signed for quality control. Dedicated to a farm-to-bottle process, they source corn from the top farms and craft their spirits from one-of-a kind hand-crafted copper pot stills. All of Blue Clover’s small batch spirits are corn based and gluten free. Blue Clover is a great place to stop by and linger on the patio mulling over one of their many handcrafted cocktails. Ladies, may I recommend the Lucky Lady, a periwinkle blue concoction pictured above with Blue Clover Gin, Crème de Violette, lemon and simple syrup.  Pick up a bottle of Blue Clover vodka or gin for your bar at home, or you can also purchase Blue Clover Vodka and Gin at Total Wine, Costco, and AJ’s.
