Sipping & Selecting Cover Colors for Volume 3

April 27, 2023 Makenzi Hogan

To toast the official arrival of Spring and, more importantly, select cover colors for the next installation of The Scout Guide Phoenix & Scottsdale, we gathered with our members at Good Vibe Studios. There, alongside Volume 2 Members and new Volume 3 Members, we sipped and selected the ribbon and cover colors for the next volume.

In addition to scouting Phoenix and Scottsdale for the Valley’s exceptional locally-owned businesses, each year The Scout Guide Phoenix & Scottsdale team develops a unifying creative vision that informs the overall feel of the guide, from the individual spreads to, of course, the cover colors. It’s an inspiring, exciting process that finds our team looking to the abundant natural beauty of our surroundings and tapping the prolific creative talent within the Valley. We are so thrilled we could include Volume 3 in the selection process this year.

Where Volume 2’s saguaro green cover and sunset orange ribbon colors — echoed throughout each spread whether in color or location choice — were a nod to Phoenix and Scottsdale’s natural beauty, Volume 3 will be equally intentional. To help bring our preliminary selections to life, our hosts,  Good Vibe Media decorated their studio rooms according to our vision behind each color pairing.

Armed with sips (sparkling rosé curated from Tarbell’s and champagne color droppers courtesy of urbAna) Members perused the individual studios at Good Vibe Studios, an exercise that invited them to immerse themselves in our visions for Volume 3. Themes for Volume 3 spanned Etheral, Modern, and Boho.

After previewing the cover color pairings and casting their votes, our Scouted Members enjoyed light bites — courtesy of the delicious Postino — and long talks with fellow members. It’s a unique privilege to bring together Phoenix and Scottsdale’s best and brightest entrepreneurial minds to help foster new connections and forge exciting collaborations.

Arizona Hikes & Sights

March 28, 2023 Makenzi Hogan

From deserts dotted with saguaros and unique volcanic rock formations to aspen-covered mountain peaks and astoundingly steep mesas, Arizona flourishes with diverse landscape to be explored by foot. Whether you’re looking for a quick, strenuous sweat through the soaring red rocks of Sedona or an all-day excursion traversing the awe-inspiring ravines in the Grand Canyon, Arizona offers an abundance of outdoor adventure. To help you navigate our state's natural wonder, we’ve Scouted the best hikes and sights suited for everyone from novices to thrill-seekers, and every adventurer in between.

And since sunsets remain synonymous with Arizona just as saguaros are with the Sonoran Desert, we’ve taken the liberty of including a few favorite local spots for admiring those famous cotton candy skies!

LOCAL HIKES

DOUBLE BUTTE LOOP

Papago Park | 2.2 Mile Loop | Easy | This hike attracts locals and tourists alike for its unique landscape, wildlife, and low level of difficulty. This 45-minute route makes a fantastic, not-too-tough outing for families with children of all ages plus offers pups plenty of special areas to roam off leash.

HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK TRAIL at PAPAGO PARK

Papago Park | 0.3 Miles Out & Back | Easy | Fantastic for beginner hikers, littles, or those just wanting to explore Phoenix’s natural splendor, this short trail offers a fantastic reward with a sprawling view overlooking the city.

QUARTZ RIDGE TRAIN

32nd & Lincoln | 3.2 Miles Out & Back | Easy to Moderate | This straightforward trail through the Sonoran desert will get your blood pumping in about an hour and a half while constantly rewarding you with ever-changing views of the city and magnificent surrounding mountains. Great for out-of-towners or as a run for an added challenge.

HIDDEN VALLEY TRAIL

South Mountain Preserve | 3.6 Mile Loop | Moderate | Running along Phoenix’s South mountain, this rugged, narrow passage meanders through two large boulders featuring unique rock formations and amazing vista views overlooking the bustling city. A local hidden gem, this trail has lower foot traffic so don’t be surprised if you cross paths with the local wildlife.

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN SUMMIT TRAIL

Phoenix Mountains Preserve | 0.9 miles Out & Back | Moderate | Deceptively easy at the start, this hike guarantees a solid workout as the incline quickly ramps up on your way up the mountain. We recommend timing your hike just right so that you reach the top in time to watch the sunrise or sunset over North Mountain and Shaw Butte.

PINNACLE PEAK TRAIL

Pinnacle Peak Park | 4 Miles Out & Back | Moderate | In just a little over two hours, this popular Scottsdale hike offers a fantastic workout as you navigate the steep steps and switchbacks of the beautiful desert landscape. No dogs allowed so be sure to leave your pups at home!

ECHO CANYON TRAIL

Camelback Mountain | 2.5 Miles Out & Back | Hard | One of two trails that will lead you right to the top of the iconic Camelback Mountains, this short but challenging adventure is for experienced hikers looking to get their hearts racing with steep switchbacks and a quick incline. Discover pockets offering secret overlooks and a truly breathtaking view at the top.

TOM'S THUMB TRAILHEAD

McDowell Sonoran Preserve | 4.4 Miles Out & Back | Hard | Notable for its smooth trail, ancient towing granite slabs, and abundant desert flora, this hike features a stiff climb in a relatively untouched area of Phoenix offering a stronger sense of seclusion compared to other trails.

PIESTEWA SUMMIT TRAIL

Phoenix Mountain Preserves | 2.1 Miles Out & Back | Hard | Almost entirely uphill, this trail is a local favorite for the great workout it offers in a relatively short amount of time. Amazing 360-degree views and cooler temperatures await you at the top, making the steep 1,000-foot climb more than worth it. Pro-tip: Beat the crowd and the afternoon heat by making this a sunrise or sunset adventure.

DAYTRIP-WORTHY HIKES

CATHEDRAL ROCK TRAIL

Sedona | 1.3 Miles Out & Back | Hard | More of a rock climb than a hike, this relatively short trail is ideal for hikers who want to challenge themselves and experience the intense beauty of Sedona’s red rocks. Expect to do some rock scrambling during the final stretch to the top.

DEVIL'S BRIDGE TRAIL

Sedona | 3.9 Miles Out & Back | Moderate | A right of passage for first-timers in Sedona, this popular adventure will reward you with breathtakingly beautiful views of Devil’s Bridge - an iconic landmark and the largest natural sandstone arch in Coconino National Forest. The trail’s incline is minimal and hikers will be pleased with the cactus and wildflowers that line the path making for a beautiful scene along the way.

SOLDIER PASS TRAIL

Sedona | 4.5 Mile Loop | Moderate | From the Devil’s Sinkhole and the Seven Sacred Pools to the famous Sedona red rocks and the Devil’s Cave, this hike offers a rare glimpse of the geological uniqueness and powerful natural energy found in the Red Rock Secret Wilderness.

WEST FORK TRAIL

Sedona | 6.5 Miles Out & Back | Moderate | This hike offers a steady incline that is a fun, approachable challenge for families with children of all ages. During your journey, you will hop across babbling brooks, wander through lush greenery, and encounter towering red rocks. Be sure to pack a picnic to enjoy once you reach the top.

FATMAN'S LOOP

Flagstaff | 2.4 Mile Loop | Moderate | A relatively easy walk with a few steeper sections, this trail offers an encounter with the diverse plant species and wildlife found in the area. You’ll also enjoy unique volcanic rock formations from Mt. Eden plus sweeping views overlooking Flagstaff from the many lookout points along the way.

ELDEN LOOKOUT TRAIL

Flagstaff | 6.3 Miles Out & Back | Hard | Begin your journey through beautiful woodlands and groves of aspen trees before you ascend the staircase of petrified lava to the mountain's summit where you’ll enjoy sweeping city views and an intimate look at the mountain’s unique geology. Though this hike might be strenuous, the beautiful scenery makes any huff-and-puff breaks well worth it.

HUMPHREY'S PEAK

Flagstaff | 9.6 Miles Out & Back | Hard | The highest point in Arizona, the hike to Humphrey’s Peak rewards you with awe-inspiring panoramic views, and if the sky is clear, you might even glimpse the Grand Canyon in the distance. The widespread display of aspen trees makes this a fantastic hike to do during the fall when the leaves are bursting with color.

BEAR CANYON to SEVEN FALLS TRAIL

Tucson | 8.3 Miles Out & Back | Moderate | Awaiting at the end of this gorgeous canyon hike is the closest thing you’ll find in the area to an oasis. From the towering saguaro cacti, you’ll pass along the way to the multi-level, crystal-clear waterfall perfect for hot summer day swimming, it’s no wonder this trail is deemed an essential Tucson adventure.

BRIDAL WREATH FALLS TRAIL

Tucson | 5.7 Miles Out & Back | Moderate | Watch as the landscape during this climb morphs from classic desert to a massive grassland, then finally a beautiful 25-foot waterfall oasis. This trail gets busy so come early and leave your pups at home for this one!

BLACKETTS RIDGE

Tucson | 5.7 Miles Out & Back | Hard | Located near the Catalina Foothills, this hike features a very steep, rocky, and technical ascent that rewards incredible eagle-eye views of Sabino Canyon. Expect a non-stop, heart-pumping climb surrounded by picturesque scenery every step of the way.

Photography courtesy of Outside.

SOUTH KAIBAB TRAIL to OOH AHH POINT

Grand Canyon | 1.8 Miles Out & Back | Moderate | Adventure away from the South Rim and spend some time on this trail where every step of the way offers breathtaking views, culminating at Ooh Ahh Point where you’ll enjoy spectacular panoramas including the little-visited East Grand Canyon. This trail is safe, easy to follow, and great for beginners.

BRIGHT ANGEL TRAIL

Grand Canyon | 15.3 Out & Back | Hard | For those wanting to experience the Grand Canyon from below, this trail is one of the most popular day hikes and a great entry point for first-time visitors. With many major turnaround points and scenic views along the way, hikers can choose their adventure while still experiencing the highlights of this iconic terrain.

GRANDVIEW TRAIL

Grand Canyon | 10.6 Mile Loop | Hard | This unmaintained but well-traveled path from Grandview Point is easily the toughest, most rugged of Grand Canyon’s day hikes. For those wanting a shorter trip out of this trail, opt for turning back at Horseshoe Mesa where you can grab a peek at the old copper mines and enjoy fantastic views up and down the canyon.

A Summertime Sip & Scout

March 1, 2023 Makenzi Hogan

Photography by Marion Rhodes.

At The Scout Guide, the story begins in print and continues online. Yet, even in our increasingly digital world, we believe the story must also be told in person. Which is why we relish any opportunity to gather with our community of entrepreneurs, creatives, thought leaders, and doers. The tech-savvy 21st century world of networking, video-chatting, liking and sharing can be wonderfully connective, but somehow pales in comparison to face to face interaction. This feeling is especially poignant whenever we depart an event designed or hosted by one of the Valley’s incredibly talented entertaining experts…

Photography by Marion Rhodes.

On the heels of our April 2022 launch of The Scout Guide Phoenix & Scottsdale Volume 2, we had the pleasure of connecting Scouted Members, Bonner David Galleries and PS Creative, to help us host another network event.

PS Creative’s Leila Adnani, Kendal Macumber, and Sean Kyte, who coordinated the Sip & Scout. Photography by Marion Rhodes.

The gathering, a Summertime Sip & Scout, was a proper Scout Guide affair brought to life by the ministrations of Scouted members. Graciously, Christi Bonner Manuelto and Clark David of Bonner David Galleries agreed to host fellow members, local artists, and artisans in their beautiful Old Town Gallery. And, with the choice location secured, PS Creative’s Leila Adnani, Kendal Macumber, and Sean Kyte set to work coordinating the event’s details.

Beverages by Tarbell’s. Photography by Marion Rhodes.

Cheese & charcuterie by Tarbell’s. Photography by Marion Rhodes.

Florals by Camelback Flowershop. Photography by Marion Rhodes.

Identifying choice vendors for the gathering was simple. PS Creative tapped fellow Volume 2 Members for the essentials: Tarbell’s for light bites and beverages and Camelback Flowershop for florals. With a backdrop such as Bonner David Galleries, little else was needed to create the perfect setting, afterall.

Photography by Marion Rhodes.

The turnout was a testament to our local business community’s eagerness to connect with one another. And, as the evening carried on, it was clear that when Scouted Members collaborate magic happens.

Photography by Marion Rhodes.

As with all TSG Phoenix & Scottsdale events, it was such a delight to bring the Valley’s prodigious talent together to produce a stunning event and, perhaps more delightful, to provide an excuse for the best and brightest in Phoenix and Scottsdale to mix, mingle, and make new, meaningful connections.

How Sparkle Bar Will Enhance Super Bowl Events

January 23, 2023 Makenzi Hogan

Originally published by BIZ SPOTLIGHT on January 19th, 2023.

Since she learned about supplier opportunities for Super Bowl LVII in Arizona, Alex Bradberry, the founder of The Sparkle Bar, has been preparing for an influx of business in 2023.

This year's Super Bowl will be the first that Scottsdale-based The Sparkle Bar, an inclusive makeup artistry studio, will be part of by providing full makeup services for a variety of game-related events, activations, photo shoots and more.

The Sparkle Bar is one of more than 200 small and minority-owned businesses that were selected to be part of the NFL's Business Connect program, which aims to diversify contracts with suppliers and provide networking opportunities for local companies.

"I'm super proud to be growing this business and have the opportunity to collaborate and work alongside programs like the Business Connect for Super Bowl, which allow us to do what we normally to, which is more traditionalized beauty makeup, getting ready for things, but also add to activations and do events and create experiences," Bradberry told the Business Journal.

Located in the Old Town Scottsdale area, the company started in 2015 after the owners spearheaded a bill that changed Arizona law so that makeup artists were no longer required to be licensed cosmetologists and aestheticians. This helped pave the way for other artists to offer services outside of a department or makeup store setting.

They opened a full-service makeup studio that focused on applying makeup instead of selling it, said Bradberry, adding that there wasn't a studio that celebrated diversity through makeup without pressuring customers to buy product.

"This space was really created to celebrate the diversity and beauty and be accessible for all, to be reminded that they are perfect as they are," she said. "It's not about selling anything, it's all about an experience and enhancing your already beautiful features."

The Sparkle Bar is a team of about 16 people, including in-studio artists and an activation team, which goes to events to add embellishments or different colors on attendees' faces, among other services. The studio serves about 200 clients monthly on average depending on the time of year.

So far, Bradberry said they have been contracted to help with makeup services for a photoshoot of Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee members, but she expects more opportunities in the near future.

"We fully anticipate that very soon we're going to start to see these add ons, enhancements, experiential pieces that we bring added to the mix," she said. "I'm super excited about what that will look like and hoping that we have the opportunity to work with awesome companies, people and brands."

Bradberry said The Sparkle Bar might be contracted to be at a host hotel for touch ups for families or spouses of NFL players, for example, or at one of the Super Bowl parties where her artists can add team colors and rhinestones to people's faces so they're encouraged to take photos, selfies and post online.

"Before they go take that photo in the photo booth, they'll have a little sparkle or something that says ... 'I had an experience while I was at this event,'" she said. "We do events like Magic in Las Vegas, for example, where we're part of the ambiance but create an experience."

Bradberry is hoping that the increase exposure will also help the business recover from the adverse impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced them to shut down their storefront for about six months and pivot to virtual services.

"We absolutely have continued growth plans, we'll be launching product and an educational component to our business very soon, so I'm really excited about the momentum this is building," she said. "We're building back up to our full team, but I'm very encouraged by where we're at and the growth we've experienced and the way we've been able to pivot and shift and adapt."

TSG TIP: Expert Tips for Embracing Wellness in 2023

January 5, 2023 Makenzi Hogan

While the time to commit or recommit to your health and wellness is always right, the new year always offers an extra dose of motivation. To help you capitalize on those goals — whatever they might be — we chatted with scouted health and wellness experts throughout the valley. Each is an incredible resource that lends Phoenix and Scottsdale residents access to world-class services, technology, and practices.

From insight from Optimyze’s Michael Roviello, MaED/AET to tips from Hydrate IV Bar’s Danielle Withycombe, guidance from Framed Ewe Christi Kimball to wisdom from Beauty & Propaganda’s Zulieka Zaragosa, keep reading for better health and a brighter spirit in 2023.

CHRISTY KIMBALL of FRAMED EWE

Invest in great sunglasses. Like snow boots and a warm coat are essential components of winter gear for colder climates, sunglasses are an essential part of desert gear. And for Phoenicians planning on upping their outdoor time — say with a new workout regimen or commitment to hiking — a great pair of sunnies is essential to protecting your eyes and the surrounding skin.

Schedule your eye exam. Eye exams aren’t just for testing your eyesight. In fact, you can learn a number of things related to your eye and general health at your yearly exam. Dry eye, focusing issues, and glaucoma are common maladies that many don’t realize they have. We like to schedule an hour per exam to ensure we address all of their eye needs, in addition to narrowing in on the right prescription, of course.

Get the right prescription. There are so many ways to customize lenses to protect eyes, reduce, eye strain, and get crisp vision. A great optician, like our partner at In Focus Solutions, will interview you on your lifestyle and occupation to fit you with the right prescription, down to the lenses. The proper fitment can improve eye strain and posture, which can lead to a dramatic improvement in lifestyle.

Tell Framed Ewe that this article directed you to them for 20% off your first purchase. Some restrictions apply.

Set aside the time. No matter what wellness commitment you’ve made — meditation, healthy eating, quality sleep — make sure you budget time for it. Being intentional about your time will help you stay committed to whatever wellness routine to which you committed.

Be consistent. Daily commitment to your wellness practice will yield impressive results over time. For example, consistent Vitamin IV therapy helps the body maintain a healthy immune system and keep hydration levels up — especially important in a desert location

Start small. “Some days are harder than others,” admits Danielle. To avoid burnout — and stay motivated even on those hard days — Danielle recommends starting small. And while goals should be challenging, Danielle emphasizes they should always be realistic. Bonus points for designing fun, attainable goals and teaming up with a friend with similar goals for built-in accountability and support.

To celebrate the opening of its third location, Hydrate is offering the first 50 clients a lifetime membership for $99. Plus, enjoy Wellness Wednesdays weekly, which feature a Wellness IV for $100 and 50% off Vitamin D3 injections.

Embrace your individual beauty. Experiment with trends, try new styles, but always honor the unique attributes that make you, you. Comparison is the thief of joy.

Tap an expert. Whether it’s for health, wellness, or beauty, don’t be afraid to ask for help from the pros. Beauty & Propaganda makeup artists are on standby to help you brush up on your glam skills with a private or group makeup class.

Pamper yourself! Nothing motivates you toward a goal quite like a little reward, and Beauty & Propaganda has some of the best. Meet a milestone? Schedule a blowout, manicure/pedicure, spray tan, or other service as a pat on the back.

For the month of January, spend $100 in product and receive $25 back in the form of a B&P gift card!

MICHAEL ROVIELLO of OPTIMYZE

Add more stress to your life. The good kind, that is. “We cannot hide from stress and pretend it doesn’t exist,” explains Michael Roviello, MaED/AET. “Nor can we numb ourselves with alcohol, busy work, or medication.” What we can do, however, is train stress responses by working with natural resources like cold water (showers or plunges), saunas, fasting, and weight training. Such tools mimic what our ancestors experienced daily — the very things that made them resilient, resourceful, mentally tough, and emotionally strong.

Connect with nature. Make time to enjoy the sunlight and walk barefoot in the grass. Grabbing a few minutes of morning sun is an easy hack for improving mental and physical health. How? Circadian rhythms, of course. “When setting our circadian clocks, light is critical, as it releases the stress hormone, cortisol, which acts as a ‘wake-up’ signal, promoting wakefulness and focus throughout the day.”

Embrace discipline. Michael stresses that “discipline is the key to happiness and health.” Create new routines and non-negotiable. When you create a non-negotiable — whether it’s in the form of a daily sauna, movement, yoga, meditation, diet, or whatever might suit your goals — you eliminate the opportunity to get in your head and negotiate your time or ability to stick to your commitment. But don’t forget to find the fun in it all! At Optimyze, we’ve made wellness accessible, easy, and fun.

Optimyze is currently offering discounted rate for new clients, including upgrades such as Red Light Therapy, Biocharger, Halo Therapy, and more. Client’s choice! $49 first time, 1-hour includes upgrade. Don’t forget to tell them Scout sent you!
