6 Ways to Use The Scout Guide

April 5, 2023 Makenzi Hogan

Originally published by THE SCOUT GUIDE on April 3rd, 2023.

The Scout Guide’s mission has always been to support small businesses and the hard-working entrepreneurs behind them. Through the articles you read here, we introduce you to Scouted businesses across the country, and you can also get to know them through their gorgeous images in our print guides. But the story doesn’t end there. Here, we offer a refresher on how you can use The Scout Guide to connect more deeply with the businesses in your community, and more importantly, how you can support them.

Shop and support these businesses with your dollars. When you shop at scouted businesses, you’re not only putting money into the pockets of hard-working entrepreneurs, but you’re also putting it back into your community.

Refer a friend to scouted businesses. Word of mouth matters! When you have a positive experience with a Scouted business, be that a boutique, medical professional, esthetician, or restaurant, tell your friends and family about them.

Plan your next vacation with The Scout Guide. The Scout Guide is the ultimate resource for your travel plans. In more than 80 cities coast to coast, our local editors offer recommendations on where to stay, eat, drink, and play when visiting their city.

Discover thriving small businesses in other cities. The Scout Guide network is wide, introducing you to hard-working entrepreneurs in cities across the country that put their heart and soul into their businesses, offering consumers a unique and personal experience.

Share the guide with friends, family, and neighbors. Have a friend who just relocated to a new city? Is your recent graduate settling into their college town? Do you have a girls’ trip planned and you want to prep your crew? From our stunning print guides, to our online directory and social channels, spread The Scout Guide love by sharing how our city guides can help everyone find the experts and experiences they’re seeking. From artists to architects, dermatologists to doggy day care providers, florists to financial planners, stationers to spas—and cheat sheets on where to stay, shop, and dine—we’ve got you covered.

Follow along socially for all things local. Stay up to date on what’s happening in The Scout Guide universe by following TSG National on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. And find TSG in your city and follow along to connect with your cities of interest.

Toasting to Volume 2!

May 17, 2022 Makenzi Hogan

We’re still reveling in the beauty of the evening marking the launch of The Scout Guide Phoenix & Scottsdale Volume 2. Gathering with our community’s small business owners to celebrate their impact on the community was the perfect culmination of a year of scouting Volume 2. Before diving into the finer points of the event, we want to extend our most utmost appreciation to our launch party partner, Cloth & Flame.

From the moment we approached Olive Laux and Matt Cooley, the visionary founders behind the locally founded experiential event business, we knew we’d entrusted our signature event with the experts in creating memorable occasions. Often tapped by multinational corporations to design unique experiences, Cloth & Flame surpassed even their world-class bar for The Valley’s small businesses.

Olivia and Matt generously extended the expertise of their team and resources to customize this one-of-a-kind event. Their team worked tirelessly from conceptual planning to design and decor, guest communication, and on-site execution to find a yes to all of our ideas and requests. And as we learned, the magic behind their unique experience is in all of those meaningful details.

Now, onto the exquisite details documented in Winona Grey’s gorgeous photography.

Our venue, The Icehouse, set a unique tone for the night, its historic location and industrial-chic aesthetic evoking downtown Phoenix’s storied past and exciting, profoundly creative future.

But, before experiencing The Icehouse’s otherworldly interior, guests were met streetside by two unexpected delights: Pop of Color’s elaborate balloon installation that hinted at Volume 2 cover colors and a friendly Beer Burro toting a satchel filled with copies of the newest release. While capturing a photo with this distinctly Arizona furry-faced icon created an impromptu paparazzi moment, eagerness to experience the much-anticipated launch party drew guests inside.

Inside, guests experienced the magic of small businesses working together, with each generous vendor’s contributions enhancing the next’s and creating fabulous photo opportunities. Many a snap was shot in front of Pop of Color’s custom-colored balloon installation that appeared to crawl along the massive concrete wall towering over Alpha-Lit’s impressive three-foot letters, which, of course, spelled out “TSG V2” in honor of the occasion.

Florals by Camelback Flowershop complimented the boho chic decor designed by Cloth & Flame, with dusty pastels and saguaro greens of the arrangements echoing both Volume 2 colors and Pop of Color’s custom-colored coordinated balloons. Topping most surfaces - even the floor - guests had ample opportunity to enjoy the Wabi-Sabi beauty of each Camelback Flowershop arrangement.

TSG Phoenix & Scottsdale alum Benedict’s Catering designed the bar program, serving up delicious cocktails, bubbles, wine, and local beer. Dawn Kennington-Bejar, owner of Benedict’s Catering, drew inspiration from Volume 2 cover colors, creating the custom Spring Thyme Cocktail that guests sipped as they explored the rest of the venue - and TSG experience - perusing an industrial bookcase displaying each member spread and commissioning a hand-lettered guide by Desert Plume Calligraphy.

Volume 2’s launch party was nothing short of magical, from the ambiance to the appetizers. Guest enjoyed the passed appetizers created by Cloth & Flame's in-house culinary team led by Executive Chef & Culinary Director Nick Rusticus.

A TSG launch party is never complete without videography documenting the essence and feel of the event! Click below to view The Good Vibe Media ‘s masterfully crafted version of the evening.

The Good Vibe video mavens strategically moved throughout the space, filming hosted guests and event details in a stealth-like fashion. With a trained eye for branding, we love how they creatively used the large-scale guide cover layered with balloons and botanicals (that functioned as a photobooth) in their videography.

As the night drew on, local talent Kim Weston provided entertainment, performing both originals and seductive spins on jazz standards, crowd favorites, and favorite artists such as Norah Jones, Esperanza Spalding, Joni Mitchell, and Edith Piaf. The Phoenix-based vocalist, violinist, bandleader, songwriter, poet, and recording artist, struck the perfect tone as her music subtly enhanced the atmosphere and created a distinct vibe to the celebration.

To cap the evening off, we invited our Members to take home a party gift: mini champagne bottles were customized and decorated by Cammie Cutter Designs, hand-poured Sedona Sunset scented Koko’s Candle, personalized stationery from Pretty Paper Club, a hand-lettered Volume 2 guide by Desert Plume Calligraphy, and their framed spread

The custom gifts created by these local creatives were designed to thank TSG members for their support of our big mission…

In short, the evening was nothing short of perfect, and we are so grateful to have celebrated - in person, no less - with the inspiring businesses that make our community so distinctive.

To our Members, thank you so much for joining us. If you’d like to peruse additional photos, click here…

It was a delight to work with these incredibly talented local vendors - many of which are Volume 2 Members. To learn more about working with them on your next event, reach out directly and don’t forget to tell them Scout sent you!

Anatomy of a Guide

April 29, 2022 Makenzi Hogan

THE EDITOR

The primary job of each TSG editor is to produce a guide that distinctively showcases small business owners in their communities. As TSG Phoenix & Scottsdale Editor, Sasha Clements shares, launching your guide is a continual discovery and creative process.

Traditionally, a TSG print guide is scouted, shot, designed, printed, and distributed over one year. In February 2020, Sasha began conversations with clients for the inaugural Phoenix & Scottsdale guide, signing one client by the end of that first month. Then business - and the world - shut down, putting Sasha’s mission and production timeline to the test. In the strange months that followed, TSG Phoenix & Scottsdale focused on supporting the community, building a platform upon which small businesses could rely.

As restrictions eventually loosened and businesses reopened doors, Sasha pivoted once again. “It was the resilience and determination of our community that fueled me to scout, shoot, and design our first guide in four short months.” Volume 1 launched in March of 2021, just one month past her original launch date.

SCOUTING PHOENIX & SCOTTSDALE

“Volume 1 was special because it brought many local businesses together in the face of adversity and celebrated supporting local at a time that carried more significance than ever before.” However, Sasha reflects, “it was when we began scouting for Volume 2 that we truly felt momentum for our mission.”

Sasha credits the confluence of local-centricity, an explosion of growth, and the power of print for that momentum. “With Volume 1 in circulation, business owners could experience TSG and witness its impact on scouted businesses.”

Inaugural members eagerly returned for Volume 2, and additional categories were introduced to welcome new businesses. Most excitingly, the generousity of several members allowed Sasha to feature several non-profit partners, conveying what TSG Editors know to be true: small business has a big impact on  communities.

“To me, scouting is about discovery,” explains Sasha. “As an editor, I’m in the unique position to learn the stories behind the businesses that shape our community.” However, Sasha continues, “being scouted is just the beginning of the TSG experience.”

THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Integral to being scouted is the opportunity to collaborate with editors on the page or pages within the guide. Throughout the creative process, editors wear the hat of a creative director to distill the story behind each business into a compelling image. “My job is to guide members through the creative process, as well as to produce images that will pique the reader’s interest and encourage them to learn more about the scouted member,” remarks Sasha.

Ultimately, each editor brings a unique skill set and aesthetic to their guide, often choosing to weave a theme throughout the guide to tell a larger story. For Sasha, it was important to echo the natural beauty found in the Phoenix & Scottsdale landscapes. This intentional decision was echoed in the timing and location of spreads and, most notably, her choice of cover colors. Flip through Volume 2 to find that many spreads reflect the saguaro green of the book and sunset orange of its stripe.

THE DESIGN & PLANNING STAGE

An editor's storytelling continues into the design stage, as sharing the story of each business while organizing the guide into an seamless narrative is a delicate dance. “It’s always a thrill to see the pieces start to come together though,” says Sasha.

Spread by spread, editors spend hours designing, paginating, and, well, editing the upcoming guide. Countless edits and proofs later, the guide goes to print and editors shift their focus to launching in style.

Launch parties have become something of a tradition for TSG Editors - not to mention fabulous affairs. Functioning as both a celebration of a year’s worth of Scouting and the unveiling of the market’s best and brightest, TSG launch parties are a special aspect of membership. Planning a launch party is also a welcome distraction as editors eagerly await the delivery of their guide.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT

Sasha describes the day guides are delivered as nothing short of special. “It’s a year’s worth of effort in tangible form.” The only thing that’s better? Toasting the guide at the launch party.

In the wake of the launch party, distribution of the Guide throughout the community begins. And the magic of the Guide continues as locals discover (or rediscover) businesses that are sure to help them live a beautiful life.

A Note from the Editor

April 5, 2022 Makenzi Hogan

This edition of The Scout Guide Phoenix & Scottsdale celebrates the exceptional local businesses and organizations that make our community a remarkable place to live, work and play.

The individuals featured on these pages followed their passion and took the risk of persevering the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. They chose to bring their dreams to life here - to share their unique gifts and talents -  by starting or growing their businesses in the Valley.

Whether by creating or curating a collection of unique items, or providing a personalized service that helps change lives or by designing spaces or products that bring more beauty to our lives, our homes, and our great state of Arizona, they’ve given our community an identity all its own.  For that, we owe them the utmost gratitude. Thank you for being the backbone of our thriving city.

To all of the business owners and community leaders joining us in this issue, thank you for being a part of this collective network that supports local and small businesses.  It is an honor to help tell your story and I can’t wait to share more about you in the coming year.

Live . Love . Local.

Scouted Women Owned Businesses

February 28, 2022 Makenzi Hogan

On Tuesday, March 8th, the world will observe #InternationalWomensDay. And while we work hard to support women - especially women who are small business owners - no matter the hashtag, March 8th is a wonderful opportunity to reset and renew our commitment to championing our fellow women.

At The Scout Guide Phoenix & Scottsdale, we are fortunate to be surrounded by so many intelligent, driven, entrepreneurial women who are making a difference in our community each and every month of the year. And, as women and female business owners, we know first-hand the importance of supporting women. To put it succinctly, incredible things happen. To help you support the women-owned businesses in Phoenix & Scottsdale and take part in the incredible things they’re doing, we’ve put together a list of our Scouted favorites…
